Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations have arrested three suspects who allegedly siphoned over Ksh970,000 from an Equity Bank account of Faith Wanjiku.
The three Antony Babu Kaira, Kelvin Maina, and Joseph Kariuki are in lawful custody awaiting arraignment on Wednesday.
According to DCI, the suspects transacted the money in four series using the Eazzy app as follows:
1. Antony Kaira – Ksh300,030
2. Kelvin Maina – Ksh300,030
3. Vivian Jelagat – Ksh300,030
4. Ksh70,000 to various Equitel numbers.
The matter first came to the public attention last week after distressed relatives of the victim reached out to State House Digital Communication’s Director, Dennis Itumbi, on social media in the bid help her recover the funds.
Itumbi posted the letter from Wanjiku on his social media pages to highlight her plea for justice.
According to the victim, she opened an account with Equity Bank on the 31st May 2019 which was credited with Ksh1 million from the sale of her piece of land.
However, she discovered that Ksh 970,216 was illegally siphoned from her account on July 16, 2019.
Wanjiku noted that she never made the withdrawals because she does not have a smartphone and had never registered to use Equity’s Eazzy App.
She added that whereas she gets notified of transactions happening on her account, she never received any from the illegal transactions.
Additionally, she indicated she had never lost her ATM card.
In the letter, Wanjiku explained that when she reported the matter to Equity Bank, a staff there accused her of sharing her ATM pin with a third party, which she denied.
Last week, Equity Bank made a pledge to investigate the loss of her funds.
